Gears In Motion: Episode Seven (7)

Updated: Dec 13, 2022

Ask someone what they want for lunch and you get specific, immediate answers. Ask someone what their career goals are and you are likely to get blank stares, or vague, pie-in-the-sky, floating point ideas. Little thought is given to the latter. The saying goes something to the effect of, any direction is fine when you have no destination. Why? We have not put the appropriate time and thought into the question at hand: what do I want out of my career? Our focus is misplaced. Yes, life is a function of opportunities and timing, but we have the opportunity to query ourselves to help direct how we approach our vocations.

My life got infinitely better when I began to interrogate myself deeply (along with the enlisting of others). And my career is no exception. I invite you to inventory your preferences, your ability to contribute, and the environment you thrive in. Your career does not have to be a series of job unconnected switches, but a larger, proactive narrative in real-time.

In Episode Seven (7) of #GearsinMotion, Regine probes me to understand what questions I ask myself in planning my career and why it is important to leverage your gifting, your ownership, and your local network before transitioning to your next role.
